THE TEXTURE OF MEMORY v2.0
Scotts Mills Gallery Gallery
Philadelphia, PA
March, April, 2026

The Texture of Memory was originally created for an installation at Practice Gallery in November, 2025. This second installation centers on an assemblage of 32 mobiles, each composed of 15 horizontally hung CDs – 480 in total. A compact disk (CD) is a form of physical memory storage. Philip has collected CDs since the early ‘90s: computer software installation disks from home and work, advertising, music transferred from vinyl LPs to later generations of digital storage, etc. They represent technological advancement as well as being personal markers of his career, parenting, and aging. Though they are manufactured to a comprehensive design specification, CDs have a remarkable range of individuality in their spectral, reflective, and refractive qualities. Their colored labels add another layer of individuality revealed through reflections in the undersides of higher components.

Installation 2.0 explores shadows and reflections from the assemblage as generated by multiple light sources - sources of varying intensity and color temperature. The CDs float, drift, and wobble; the shadows move in a slow, swirling dance; the reflections jitter in excitement. The assemblage is accompanied by five other mobiles that explore these same phenomena individually and in a small group.

Memory is fluid and contextual. When we recall events, we see them through the lens of our past and current situations and perceptions – memories evolve; memories are malleable. The Texture of Memory moves and shapeshifts in response to currents of air in the gallery as people come and go. Just as memories do, it ripples and flows, shimmers, and reassembles.

ON BALANCE
Scotts Mills Gallery
May 21 – August 13, 2021

Compositional and physical balance are fundamental to an exploration of pattern recognition, which is at the heart of language and consciousness. The fragility, persistence, and malleability of consciousness are the subject. Motion is the activating agent. Balance is the unifying element.

TRANSIENT BREVITY
The Gallery at Mercer County Community College
October 28 – December 19, 2019

This exhibition examines the notion of ephemerality and how each of the artists chooses to represent that which is fleeting. Some of the works represent direct interactions or interpretations with the surrounding environment. Other works are somewhat autobiographical, with the collective works creating a narrative we are privileged to witness. Still other works consider architectural elements in a deliberately ephemeral manner. Curated by Alice K. Thompson
